Only in Paris by Duncan J.D. Smith

10 Introduction the former industrial northeast (Arr. 10–12, 19 & 20) (along the Canal Saint-Martin and around the Cimetière du Père Lachaise). Yet more are to be found in the densely populated south (Arr. 13–15) centred on Montparnasse. Whilst walking is undeniably the best mode when exploring Paris, those with less time available will find the citywide Métro network in- valuable. Others might opt for an eco-friendly Vélib’ bicycle – or even a chauffeured Citroën 2CV***! Whatever the mode, all directions have been kept to a minimum, leaving the explorer free to find their own particular path. So whether searching for the city’s best Bistro , celebrating with Tamils in a Hindu temple, marvelling at Louis Pasteur’s mausoleum, or exploring limestone quarries beneath the Left Bank, it is the author’s intention that the reader will experience some sense of personal dis- covery, and thereby take away a more indelible memory. Happy Exploring! Duncan J. D. Smith Paris – Vienna * Dates given after the names of French rulers are regnal years; those after other personalities relate to their birth and death. ** Most street maps of Paris cover all twenty of the city’s administrative districts (Arrondissements) and include Métro routes. Excellent transport maps are avail- able free at Métro stations. *** www.velib.paris.fr and www.4roues-sous-1parapluie.com A selection of other locations within easy walking distance is given at the end of each chapter, and a list of opening times is at the back of the book.
