109 Downtown & Chinatown–Leather District Not surpisingly the South Street Diner has attracted its share of ce- lebrity guests, including actors Christopher Walken and Morgan Free- man, and rock singers Neil Young and Robert Plant. It has also featured in the film 21 (2008) and an issue of DC Comics’ Batgirl . A particularly busy day is St. Patrick’s Day, when the diner offers a Corned Beef, Cab- bage and Guinness special! Fans of WLCC diners will have to travel outside Boston to find further examples. The Deluxe Town Diner in Watertown, for example, was built the same year as the South Street Diner and looks much the same. The Rosebud Diner in Somerville is older and features a distinc- tive shovel nose and the Gothic script used originally by the company to render all their diners’ names. The Salem Diner is different again be- ing a rare example of a Sterling Streamliner built in the early 1940s by the J. B. Judkins Company to mimic the high speed Burlington Zephyr passenger train. Although original diners are now an endangered species, there are numerous modern Boston diners that deliberately offer an old school vibe. They include Mul’s Diner at 80 West Broadway (South Boston), where locals meet for blueberry pancakes, Mike’s City Diner at 1714Washington Street (South End), famous for its weekday roast turkeys, and the Galley Diner at 11 P Street (South End), which according to chef and fast food aficionado Anthony Bourdain serves the best corned beef hash and eggs in town!
